They dominated and fought over whole continents and countries, arguing over who had conquered more land. This also made a big impact on said nations, positive and negative. Going on that state of mind, the long term effects of imperialism showed for decades after it really being assumed not an imperialistic state anymore. Social Darwinism, the theory of survival of the fittest, was their justification for conquering weaker countries, if the country could fend off invaders then it shall be considered conquered.
This was controversial because some Americans were anti-imperialists who did not believe in expansionism, but in defending the Constitution. This brought about both supporters and opponents of imperialism during the Spanish-American War. Manifest Destiny is defined as the 19th century belief that expansion of the U. Similarly, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the nation of Europe and other countries took over and influenced countries that they believed were inferior to them. Imperialism could be considered as a defining characteristic of America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The United States became an imperialist nation at the end of the 19th century because Americans wanted to expand over seas with their belief in manifest destiny. The three factors that started American imperialism were political and military competition including the creation of a strong naval force, economic competition among industrial nations and a belief in the racial and cultural superiority of people of Anglo-Saxon decent. This brief war lasted less than four months from April 25 to August 12, A number of factors contributed to the United States decision to go to war against Spain. The United States gained colonies on both sides of the Pacific including Hawaii.
Starting from the late s to the early s, the US was involved in wars outside its territories and boarders. These series of wars and military interventions led to the gaining of control of some new territories. Hawaii was one of the new territories. Besides, the-the United States was increasingly gaining control, both economically and politically in some of the other countries especially Cuba. During this era of American Imperialism, there were some factors that drove the ideas especially the Social Darwinism and also Manifest Destiny.
