Remedial Math Gets a New Look at Community Colleges Nationwide
Math teachers today are grappling with the challenge of adjusting to new, rigorous college and career-ready standards, and supporting their students as they make the transition. When students struggle, the status quo response is to place them in remedial math—to slow down the pace of instruction. Ironically though, for many students the very experience of remediation can further their belief that they are incapable of math success. So what if we turn that old idea on its head?
The goal of Remedial Math is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have extreme difficulty mastering the skills and concepts of mathematical reasoning and computation. Remedial Math is a highly effective short-term intervention of tutoring in both an individualized and small group setting students who are struggling with math. Remedial Math teachers are experts in their content area who work closely with students and design prescriptive and strategic instruction to address individual student needs. Once students can meet grade-level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom, they are released from Remedial Math but are still monitored closely to ensure academic success. Aim: The idea of this unit is to bring out the maths in the culture of the students, rather than bringing the culture into the maths for the students. Basically the unit is an overview of maths as a discipline, as a day-to-day tool and as a natural system that exists in the real world of the students and links to worlds beyond their own. Objectives: Your objectives are diagnostic as well as didactic. You are identifying culturally familiar or appropriate logic patterns and applications in your students. You are also connecting these with the necessary concepts and logics needed for success in maths at school.
