The regional inception and planning workshop of West Africa Food Security Network (WAFSN), a part of International Food Security Network (IFSN), was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from March 3 to 6, 2014. It was organized by SOS SAHEL, the official partner hosting the regional secretariat of WAFSN and International Food Security Network (IFSN)l. WAFSN member country focal points from Burkina Faso, Ghana and Senegal, WAFSN Regional Secretariat personnel, and the IFSN Global Secretariat staff took part in the workshop.
Background: At its 36th Session in October 2010 the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) decided to initiate an inclusive process leading to the development of principles for responsible agriculture investment. As per the agreed TORs, the purpose of this consultation is to develop and endorse a set of principles to promote investments in agriculture towards contributing to food security and nutrition and supporting the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security. The principles are expected to be endorsed by the CFS at the Plenary in 2014.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 28th Regional Conference for Africa was held, in Tunis, Tunisia from 24-28 March 2014. The main objective of the Regional Conference was to deliberate and reach a consensus on the three key priority areas of actions needed to accelerate agricultural transformation and eradicate hunger in Africa: enhance the enabling environment for investment by the domestic private sector, including smallholder farmers; invest in the enhancement of agricultural productivity and constructive engagement of youth, smallholder farmers and family farming; and determine how CAADP can more effectively contribute to building systemic capacity for monitoring and evaluation, and results-oriented action.
ASASN , IFSN's regional partner in South America, had their four-day planning workshop in La Paz, Bolivia from March 19 to 21. The workshop provided the member countries an opportunity to meet and share common challenges in the region, and plan activities for 2014 accordingly.
A four-day regional planning workshop of Asia Food Security Network (AFSN), a part of International Food Security Network (IFSN), was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 27-30 March 2014. AFSN member country representatives (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Vietnam), representatives from AFSN Regional Secretariat and ActionAid International, and IFSN Global Secretariat personnel attended the workshop.
The thirty-second FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 10 to 14 March 2014. Prior to this conference Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from Asia and the Pacific organized a two-day Consultation starting from 8 March, 2014. AFSN, a part of IFSN, participated in this consultation. Ahmed Borhan, AFSN Regional Coodinator attended the consultation along with 40 participants from 10 countries and 12 constituencies. The consultation primarily focused on developing joint positions on different key issues in line with the agenda of the FAO Regional Conference. During the consultation participants discussed common concerns as to the future of smallholder and landless farmers and pertinent issues. Apart from the CSOs, the opening session of the Consultation was also attended by Hiroyuki Konuma, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific who welcomed the CSOs to the upcoming FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific.
